Venus Bay Fishing

Fishing at Venus Bay, South Australia

If you’re keen on fishing you’ll love Venus Bay – it’s a renowned fishing spot in South Australia.  Situated on the Eyre Peninsula and aptly named ‘Australia’s Seafood Frontier’.

There are plenty of opportunities along the Venus Bay coastline to find a sheltered spot and catch Salmon or Whiting. Many areas of Venus Bay can be quite shallow at low tide increasing your chances of a good catch.

An assortment of fish are caught in our protected bay including:

  • King George Whiting
  • Tommy Ruff (Herring)
  • Flathead
  • Salmon Trout
  • Trevally
  • Snook
  • Garfish
  • Squid.

Fish from a boat or just off off the Venus Bay Jetty. While the area is a dedicated Marine Park to protect our marine life, this status does not affect recreational fishing in the area.

Venus Bay Jetty

Venus Bay has a 100m-long curving jetty with strong tidal currents.  It’s a great place to fish with the kids, with Trevally, Salmon and Tommy Ruffs plentiful day or night and sand crabs at the right time of year.

Nearby beaches

Talia Beach and Talia Caves

Mullet and salmon trout are popular here, as well as larger species. More suited to experienced fishers, beware of this stretch of beach due to strong swells and sometimes deep channels near the beach.  This can be an unforgiving stretch of beach thanks to the fragile rock and cliffs, although the Talia Caves offer spectacular scenery.

Mount Camel

Often boasting large numbers of Salmon at this relatively small beach with beautiful views and deep gutters close to the shoreline. You can often see sections of reef.

Port Kenny Jetty

It’s a smaller jetty than others in the area although you can still net a decent catch when the conditions are right.

Larger Vessels – in the Great Australian Bight

If you have a larger vessel you can catch some bigger species in the Bight (just out of the bay) including:

  • Snapper
  • Salmon
  • Nannygai
  • Sweep

Check out the photos on our Facebook page to see some recent catches from our guests! We also have boats available for hire from the park. Click here to find out more about Boat Hire.
